CBS has specials on Tiger, Nicklaus

Web posted
Saturday, April 08, 2006

CBS will go heavy on the nostalgia when it serves up coverage of the Masters Tournament for the 51st consecutive year.

A look back at Jack Nicklaus' sixth and final Masters victory in 1986 and a feature on Tiger Woods turning 30 highlight the network's programming this week.

Coverage begins today from Augusta National Golf Club on USA network and will continue Friday. Broadcast hours for both days are 4-7 p.m.

CBS takes over for the weekend, and it will show 18-hole coverage of the final two rounds. Air times are from 3:30-7 p.m. Saturday and 2:30-7 p.m. Sunday.

One new wrinkle for this year is live streaming video from Amen Corner. CBS teamed up with the Masters for the idea, which will bring all the action from Nos. 11, 12 and 13 to the official Masters Web site, www.masters.org.

CBS doesn't feel that it will take away from the ratings for the tournament, which are traditionally the highest in the sport.

"It was just kind of a logical extension and something that blends in perfectly with our coverage,'' CBS News and Sports President Sean McManus said. "The club enjoys being innovative when it comes to broadcasting golf events.''

Former PGA Tour players Phil Blackmar and Mike Hulbert will provide commentary for the Amen Corner footage.

CBS, which was honored recently for its coverage of the 2004 event, will return the same lineup in the broadcast booth from the past few years.

Jim Nantz will serve as telecast host and will be joined in the 18th tower by lead analyst Lanny Wadkins. Bobby Clampett (Nos. 11-12), Peter Kostis (No. 13), Bill Macatee (No. 14), David Feherty (No. 15), Verne Lundquist (No. 16) and Peter Oosterhuis (No. 17) round out the broadcast team. Dick Enberg will provide essays and interviews from Butler Cabin.

Tiger at 30 will air from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Saturday. Jim Nantz Remembers Augusta: The 1986 Masters will be shown from 1:30- 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

"We'll get to see and experience what it's like to be at the 1986 Masters,'' said Nantz, who is entering his 19th year as host. "This one will get it started in a unique fashion.''
