Dell Inc. is working on plans to open a PC manufacturing facility in India, a senior company official said Friday.
"We’re still in the analysis and assessment phase, but that [factory] will be coming as soon as possible," said Steve Felice, Dell’s vice president of Asia-Pacific, speaking to reporters during a conference call on Friday.
Dell’s plan to open a PC manufacturing plant in India comes against a backdrop of growing demand for PCs in Asia. PC shipments in the region rose 26.2 percent during 2005 to 41.8 million units, according to Gartner Inc., which described the region’s growth during the year as "phenomenal."
Dell currently has two Asian manufacturing sites: Xiamen, China, and Penang, Malaysia. The company recently opened its second factory in Xiamen, doubling its production capacity there, Felice said.
Dell currently operates a call center and a software development center in India.
