Plattsburgh, New York - January 3, 2006
19-year-old Wayne Coss was brought to the Plattsburgh Police station around one o'clock Friday afternoon. There he was booked for the second degree murder of his 3-month-old son Jordan.
"This really shocks the senses to everybody. When someone is being accused of causing the death of another person, obviously that is alarming. It's just so much more when you think that a baby was killed," says Chief Desmond Racicot of the Plattsburgh Police Department.
The alleged murder took place at this apartments off Margaret Street. Police say Coss violently shook the child them threw him across the room causing the baby to bounce off a chair then hit his head on the floor.
"The actions of the injuries caused critical injuries resulting in the death of Jordan Coss," says Judge Penelope Clute.
Judge Clute read the charges against Coss at his arraignment later in the afternoon. Coss was emotional in court, but never spoke. His lawyer entered a plea of not guilty. Even though police say Coss was alone with the child when this happened, Clinton County District Attorney Andrew Wylie is confident about the case.
"It is a very solid case. He has expressed some remorse through his attorney has advised me of that. I haven't personally spoken with Mr. Coss at this point in time," says Wylie.
If convicted on the murder charge, he could spend the next 25 year to life behind bars. Coss is currently being held at the Clinton County Jail without bail.
Channel 3 News spoke with the baby's mother-- Katie Coss-- late this afternoon. She requested that she not be videotaped and did not want to comment on the case.
